In English – Are you new in Sweden and want a supporting Big Sister to talk to?

If your´re a girl between 10-25 years old, in Stockholm, you can get your own Big Sister to talk to. A Big Sister is a female volunteer, about ten years older than you. She can listen and support you in dealing with feelings of anxiety, stress, depression or loneliness. She can also help you do homework, write a CV, practice Swedish or discover new places. The Big Sister have received a basic education from Tjejzonen, but she is neither an expert nor a psychologist. She is a fellow human being who listens to and support you for one year. The Big Sister can speak Swedish and often one other language such as English, Arabic, Russian or Tigrinya.

You can choose if you want to meet your Big sister live or online. Together you meet for 1-2 hours every two weeks for up to one year. You can, for example, take a walk, share a cup of coffee or tea, go to the library or talk by chat-, voice- or video conversations.

Everything you say stays with us. That means we don´t inform authorities or relatives about anything. All support at Tjejzonen is free of charge.

About Tjejzonen
Tjejzonen is Swedens largest support organisation for girls aged 10 to 25 years. We give girls support on their terms with the help of educated volunteers called Big Sisters. The Big Sisters support girls by meeting online or in real life, called Big Sister Online or Big Sister Live. Currently, we offer Big Sister Live to girls who are new in Sweden and reside in the Stockholm area.

Meet one of the Big Sisters
Showit Kidane is a Big Sister at Tjejzonen. She speaks Swedish, English and Tigrinya. Here she tells us why a Big Sister can be a great support:

A Big Sister is not here to lead you in to “a better life”, or try to “save you” in any way. We only talk about the things you want to talk about, and do things you want to do. We listen and support you, on your terms. I also want to say that, from personal experience, I know that things will get easier when you put your feelings into words. Whatever it may be about. And sometimes it can be easier to talk to someone outside your situation. I am here to show you that you are not alone and I think you are a hero!
